During the Auxiliary board meeting in June at
the Summer Annual Meeting, a motion was made by Barbara Goldstein to
use the additional money we received, along with the ASME Foundation,
in the final settlement of the Lucy Clarke Estate, to participate in
the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
Scholarships, which are given by the ASME Foundation for high school
students.
Contained in the motion was a stipulation that the current Clarke Scholarship
Committee would also administer this new scholarship on a one-year probation
period rather than try to appoint a new committee at this time. The
motion passed the Auxiliary Board. The Auxiliary will be funding one-half
of the FIRST Scholarships given this year.
The amount of money given to students by the ASME Auxiliary for the
2003-2004 academic year totaled $20,000 for Ph.D., master's and undergraduate
study.
The person to contact about requesting a loan from the ASME Auxiliary
is Janet Watson, not James Chenoweth as I reported in the June 2003
column. Her e-mail is: jswatson@bellatlantic.net.
I have been asked by the Auxiliary president to write a small article
about each of the people who are honored by our scholarships. I am seeking
information from those who knew the following people: Berna Lou Cartwright,
Lucy and Charles W.E. Clarke, Virginia Clough, Sylvia Farny, Hattie
Friend, Agnes Malakate Kezios, Elisabeth and Winchell Parsons, and Marjorie
Rothermel. I also need information about Calvin Rice, who had once served
as the equivalent of ASME's executive director, and Edith Cullimore,
an Auxiliary member. Their gifts created the Rice Cullimore Scholarship.
Please send any information, including a picture, to me at ellabv@earthlink.net.
Material can also be mailed to me. If mailing before mid-October, send
to Ella Baldwin-Viereck, 21129 Lake George Blvd. N.W., Anoka, MN 55303.
After mid-October, my address will be 301 South Miramar, No. 302, Indialantic,
FL 32903.
