Continuing Education Institute offers new engineering degree programs

Two new alliances were added last month to the growing list of educational and professional development offerings that are available through ASME's new Continuing Education Institute.

The University of Illinois College of Engineering and the University of Wisconsin Department of Engineering Professional Development are each offering a degree program for engineers.

The University of Wisconsin's Master of Engineering in Professional Practice (MEPP) degree addresses the needs of engineers who are assuming broad responsibility for project implementation and management.

The degree will help engineers to develop personal, technical and organizational skills, while improving their abilities in computer-aided analysis, design and engineering.

The degree also will enable engineers to effectively manage a broad range of information, to provide quality solutions and customer satisfaction, conduct international engineering operations, and present and sell ideas.

This four-semester online program requires two one-week summer residencies in Madison, Wis., one week during the first summer and an additional week during the second summer.

Requirements for the MEPP include a bachelor of science degree in engineering, a minimum of four years of engineering experience, and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 from the applicant's undergraduate institution.

The University of Wisconsin accepts applications each year from Nov. 1 until March 30. The class is limited to 30 students.

The University of Illinois offers a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree through its Office of Continuing Engineer-ing Education.

This degree program requires at least eight units (one unit is equivalent to four semester hours) of credit. Of the eight units, including at least six units of formal graded course work, two must be at the 400 level. At least one unit and no more than two units can be received for writing a thesis. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0.

Application requirements include a minimum GPA of 3.25 for the last 60 hours of undergraduate study and a $40 application fee.
