Training program to help understanding of Boiler Code

Next month, ASME's Professional Development Department will release a training program on CD-ROM to help engineers navigate Section VIII, Division 1 of the ASME Boiler Code.

The Section VIII, Division 1 Design & Fabrication of Pressure Vessels Computer Based Training Program is made up of eight interactive modules that contain more than 40 interactive design exercises. Participants can elect to do the exercises independently or by following the ÒStepsÓ approach in which experts will take participants through the exercise step by step.

Program participants also will have access to a Related Information link, which will connect them to the excerpts of the Boiler Code that are relevant to the problem they seek to solve.

The eight modules cover the General Requirements for all Methods of Construction and Materials, which is based on code subsection A, part UG; the Methods of Fabrication, which is based on subsection B, parts UW, UF and UB; Carbon and Low Alloy Steel, based on subsection C, part UCS; Developing Vessels under Internal Pressure, based on subsection A, part UG; Designing Vessels under External Pressure, based on subsection A, part UG; Openings and Reinforcements, based on subsection A, part UG; Inspection and Testing, based on subsection A, Part UG; and Pressure Relief Devices, which is based on subsection A, part UG.

In addition to the eight modules, the program includes a pre-test and a post-test. Successful completion of the post-test will earn participants seven Continuing Education Units.

A hard copy training manual containing all the related information is included in the package. The manual further enhances the usefulness and adaptability of this program.

The training program was developed with Will Carter, former chair of the Section VIII, Division 1 Code Committee, and reviewed by Code Committee members Don Kurle, Clyde Neely and Bob Sims.

A demo of this program can be viewed on ASME.ORG at www. asme.org/pro_dev/. A free demo on CD-ROM also may be obtained by contacting InfoCentral at (800) 843-2763 for U.S. callers and (973) 882-1167 for non-U.S. callers.

This product will be available for individual and multiple users. Both individual and multiple users can use the CD-ROM version of this program; multiple users also can choose an electronic version and install it on their network (LAN or WAN.) In both versions, individuals will receive their own training manuals and their own post-test results reports, which can be submitted to earn CEUs.

Ordering this program (order No. ZCD699) before Oct. 1 will save participants $200. Prior to Oct. 1, the price will be $695 for ASME members, $795 for nonmembers. Later, the price will increase to $895 for ASME members, $995 for nonmembers. To order this product, contact InfoCentral by phone or e-mail: infocentral@asme.org or by fax: (973) 882-1717.

For more information or to order the multi-user versions, contact Robin Jacobs, manager, Professional Development, at (212) 591-8013.
