Saabas and Wisler to present keynote at ASME Turbo Expo 2007

A keynote address featuring executives from Pratt & Whitney Canada and GE Aircraft is one of several special events scheduled for ASME's Turbo Expo 2007, to be held next month in Montreal.

The ASME International Gas Turbine Institute organizes and manages Turbo Expo, which is the Society's annual conference on gas turbine technology. It is scheduled for May 14-17 at the Palais des Congres in Montreal.

John Saabas

In a change of format for Turbo Expo, this year the keynote session will be held at the event's opening luncheon, immediately following the presentation of industry awards. The combined awards and keynote program will begin at noon on May 14.

John Saabas, executive vice president at Pratt & Whitney Canada, and David C. Wisler, manager of University Programs at GE Aircraft Engines, will address the topic, "Developing the Next Generation of Global Gas Turbine Engines," during their shared keynote session.

Saabas handles engineering, operations, quality programs, customer support, marketing, and other responsibilities and functions for Pratt & Whitney Canada, where he has worked since 1985. His area of technical expertise is aerodynamics. Saabas is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and chairman of the Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace, based in Quebec.

David C. Wisler

Wisler, an ASME Fellow and senior vice president, manages GE's University Strategic Alliance Program, which is charged with developing long-term R&D programs with universities. Wisler, who has worked at GE for 36 years, is currently the ASME senior vice president of the Institutes Sector as well as a recipient of the Melville Medal and the Gas Turbine Award. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

The exposition will be another big attraction at the conference. In addition to a display of the Bell 412HP Helicopter, the show floor will also include dozens of exhibits from companies providing products and services in the following technology areas: land-based industrial engines; commercial and military aircraft engines; oil and gas platforms; commercial power plant applications; pipeline applications; gas turbine manufacturing and packaging; auxiliary equipment production; engineering software; consulting and engineering services; gas turbine maintenance operations; package/turnkey applications; testing, research and development; and related industry services.

An Early Career Forum and Fair will also be offered to Turbo Expo visitors. The Career Forum and Fair will be held on May 13, the day before Turbo Expo's official kickoff. The forum will include experts from industry who will provide early career engineers with practical advice and relevant career information.

Three short courses — "Combustion Humming in Gas Turbine Based Power Plants," "Gas Turbine Repair and Metallurgy," and "Rotordynamic Analysis of Centrifugal Compressors and API 617 Review" — also will be held on May 13. There is a $500 registration fee for each of these seminars.

Registration for Turbo Expo is $675 for ASME members before April 16 and $775 afterward. Nonmember registration is $850 before April 16, $950 after that date. Employees of exhibiting companies may register for $575 before April 16 and $675 after that date. ASME Life Members may register for $60 before April 16, $75 afterward. Registration for ASME student members is free. Nonmember students may register for $75 before April 16, $100 after that date. Registration for the Early Career Forum and Fair is $50 for members, $75 for nonmembers. One-day registration is also available.
