ASME Fellow Dhir elected to National Academy of Engineering

Vijay K. Dhir, Ph.D., a Fellow of ASME and recipient of the Max Jacob Memorial Award in 2004, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

Vijay K. Dhir

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. The academy has recognized Dhir for his contributions to heat transfer, nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics, and nuclear reactor safety.

Dhir is dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he carries out research in aerospace systems.

Dhir leads the Boiling Heat Transfer Laboratory at UCLA, where he and his technical colleagues have conducted pioneering work in phase-change heat transfer, the physics of boiling, and related areas.

These research programs have enabled engineers worldwide to gain an increased understanding of steam generators in nuclear power plants as well as cooling systems used in spacecraft.

Born in India, Dhir received a master of technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology. Dhir continued his education and training in the United States and earned his doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 1972.

The Max Jacob Memorial Award, a joint award of ASME and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, recognizes contributions in the area of heat transfer.

Dhir has been a member of ASME since 1977.
