Nanotechnology Commercialization Showcase debuts this fall

ASME's 4th Integrated Nanosystems: Design, Synthesis and Applications Conference will feature an early team member from National Semiconductor and the debut of the Nanotechnology Commercialization Showcase during the conference from Sept. 14–16, at the University of California's Sibley Auditorium. The meeting is sponsored by the ASME Nanotechnology Institute.

The goal of the showcase is to develop new business for conference participants and facilitate the networking of professionals who can make joint ventures and corporate alliances happen.

Participants will be asked to submit a two-page extended abstract for peer review in the areas of devices and systems, nanoscale phenomena, nanomanufacturing, and general topics.

Two-page extended abstracts allow researchers and engineers to submit their latest findings. Authors are invited to submit their abstracts to the conference Web site at www.asmeconferences.org/nano05 before May 16.

Floyd Kvamme, who was one of five members of the team that joined National Semiconductor in 1967 and built it into a billion dollar company, will be a plenary speaker at Integrated Nanosystems.

Kvamme served as president of the National Advanced Systems subsidiary, which designed, manufactured and marketed large computer systems, before leaving National to join Apple Computer as executive vice president of sales and marketing.

While at Apple, his responsibilities included worldwide sales, marketing, distribution and support.

Kvamme holds two degrees in electrical engineering: a B.S. from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.S. from Syracuse University.

The Nanotechnology Commercialization Showcase will be led by Bo Varga, who is a member of the ASME Nanotechnology Institute Advisory Board. He heads the Commercialization Committee, along with Ken Epstein, Sandra Helsel and Nobiyuki Kambe.

T. James Rudd, program manager of Small Business Innovation Research at the National Science Foundation, will also provide leadership for this new initiative.

One-page nano-related business concepts and projects following the conference's theme of integration will be accepted on the program Web site at www.asmeconferences.org/nano05. They will be judged by a panel of researchers and practitioners who serve on the ASME Nanotechnology Institute Advisory Board, and by the sponsoring partners.

Sponsorship information is available on the program Web site, and your firm can also reserve a tabletop in the Nano Commercialization Showcase.

For details, visit the program Web site, or contact Raj Manchanda, director of Advanced Technology Programs, at (212) 591-7789 or via e-mail at nano@asme.org.
