Stephen T. Kugle Scholarship Fund established
for Region X students
Students in Region X will be the beneficiaries
of the Stephen T. Kugle Scholarship Fund, which his family recently
established in his memory.
Kugle was on the faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington, where
he served as student section advisor. After leaving the university,
he was a senior engineering specialist with Siemens in Arlington. He
joined ASME as a student member in 1982.
He earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas
at Arlington. He died in June 1999 at the age of 53.
Mitchell and Janis Kugle, and Katherine Kugle Williamson and Lance Williamson
contributed a total of $40,000 to establish the fund.

In explaining why they established the award, the Kugle family wrote,
"We are making this donation to your organization because we feel
this is what Stephen would have done if his life had not been shortened
with cancer. Stephen repeatedly said that the only reason a university
should exist is for the betterment of its students. We believe that
ASME, through its student sections, provides a nurturing environment
for the betterment of future engineers and is an ideal organization
to administer future scholarships from this fund."
The earnings from the endowment will be used for an annual award, to
be given to ASME student members in Region X who are juniors or seniors.
"During Stephen's many years of service as assistant vice president
of education in Region X, he greatly improved student participation
in the Student Design Contest and the Regional Student Conference,"
said Roy Breaux, past Region X vice president and Governor-Elect, adding
that Kugle also improved the Region's Student Leadership Seminars.
"Stephen was dedicated to helping students," Breaux said.
"ASME will miss his dedication to the profession."
