New technologies and their successful implementation in the oil industry's offshore activities will be examined during the 20th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2001) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 3-8.

The event is organized by ASME's Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OOAE) Division and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ) in association with 28 other societies and Brazilian organizations.

"Toward 3000" will be the theme of OMAE 2001, which will comprise six technical symposia featuring more than 400 refereed technical papers. The symposia will encompass the areas of offshore technology, safety and reliability, materials, pipeline technology, ocean space utilization, and polar and arctic engineering.

There are also five workshops scheduled during the meeting, on such topics as "Brazilian Oil and Gas Regulatory Framework: Overview"; "Environmental Protection"; "Marginal Fields Development"; "Deepwater Achievements"; and "Floating Production, Storage and Offshore Loading (FPSO) Operation and Regulation."

The conference will also have a number of invited paper sessions on subjects including numerical and physical modeling of ships and offshore structures, dynamics of FPSO in the horizontal plane, offshore applications of vortex-induced vibration, deepwater pipelines, and safety and reliability.

Registration for OMAE 2001 is $725 for members of ASME and cooperating societies, $760 for nonmembers until April 30. From May 1-28, registration is $760 for members, $836 for nonmembers.
