+ Former Indian President to Receive Hoover Medal Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, will be honored with the 2008 Hoover Medal on April 28 in New York. The medal was established by the five engineering Founder Societies — ASME; the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; the American Society of Civil Engineers; and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers — to recognize outstanding civic or humanitarian activities, constituting distinguished public service by an engineer. + Landis Medal Recipient, Abraham, Dies Eugene V. Abraham, former senior partner at Sargent & Lundy, who had a hand in the construction of more than 20 power plants throughout the United States died late last month of complications from cancer. Abraham was 71. Abraham was the 1995 recipient of the ASME Landis Medal, presented for “outstanding personal performance related to designing, constructing, or managing the operation of major steam-powered electric stations using nuclear or fossil fuels.” [Read more]
+ ECLIPSE Interns Convene at Leadership Conference Members of the ECLIPSE program (Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering) met with top ASME leaders last month to begin a process of identifying future leaders of the society. + Daniel T. Koenig, 114th ASME President, Dies Daniel T. Koenig, P.E., who served as ASME’s 114th president (1995-1996), died on March 24. He was 68. During his presidency, he spearheaded a major program to increase the relevance of ASME to mechanical engineers working in industry and helped develop the broad Societal goals to achieve ASME’s vision as the pre-eminent engineering society in the world. + “Lunacy” to Ensue at FIRST Championship in Atlanta Each year during the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, high school students and their mentors are given just six weeks to construct robots that can carry out a specific task. For this year’s challenge, entitled “Lunacy,” the students built robots that are designed to pick up game balls and place them in trailers attached to their opponents’ robots. In addition, the contest takes place on a low-friction floor, so the teams and their robots must contend with the laws of physics. The FIRST Championship takes place April 16-18 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. [Read more]
